Before you buy: get a pre-purchase inspection (roughly $100–200) on anything over about $4,000 — it is the cheapest insurance available on a used car. Check CARFAX damage notes on dealer cars (the Miata shows major damage). Confirm the title is clean and in the seller’s name before money changes hands, and confirm a current smog certificate, which California requires the seller to provide. Meet in a public place, pay by cashier’s check at the seller’s bank, and avoid wire transfers entirely.
